What is Blue light?

Sunlight is made up of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet light. We see it as white light when all are combined when we are outside. Each spectrum of color has a different energy and wavelength. Blue rays jab shorter wavelengths and more energy. Artificial Light that shines white will have a greatercompoenent of blue which will wreck havoc on our eyes, hormones, sleep and our overall health.

The Truth About Artificial Light: Melatonin, Circadian Rhythms, and Your Well-being

In today’s digital age, artificial light has become an inescapable part of our daily lives, influencing everything from our sleep patterns to our overall well-being. Yet, while most of us are aware of the convenience it offers, few realize the profound impact it has on our health, especially regarding melatonin production and circadian rhythms. Blue light, a significant component of artificial light, is often touted as a hidden culprit behind numerous health risks, from poor sleep to more serious conditions. Blue light disrupts our natural biological processes.

Understanding Blue Light and Health Risks

Blue light is everywhere, from our phone screens to the overhead lights in our homes to street lights/signs outside. It’s crucial to understand what blue light is and the health risks it poses, particularly to our circadian rhythms.

What Is Blue Light?

Blue light is a part of the visible light spectrum, with wavelengths between 400 and 490 nanometers. It’s emitted by both natural sources, like the sun, and artificial sources, such as LED lighting and electronic screens.

The prevalence of artificial blue light in our environment is a growing concern among health experts. Unlike other types of light, blue light has a high energy frequency, which can penetrate deeper into the eye and potentially cause harm over time. Blue light bends the most of any spectrum due to gravity–starts with myopia and develops to worse eye diseases over time.

Exposure to blue light, especially before bedtime, is linked to a range of health issues. This includes eye strain, sleep disturbances, and even potential long-term damage to the retina. Understanding these risks is essential for making informed choices about our light environment.

The Impact on Circadian Rhythms

Our circadian rhythm is essentially our internal body clock, regulating the cycle of sleep and wakefulness. Exposure to blue light can significantly disrupt these rhythms, especially when it occurs during evening hours.

When blue light enters our eyes, it signals the brain to remain alert, suppressing the release of melatonin, a hormone that promotes sleep. This can lead to difficulty falling asleep, reduced sleep quality, and fatigue throughout the day.

Cortisol rises when it should be low and getting ready for sleep.

Recent studies have shown that excessive blue light exposure can lead to a misaligned circadian rhythm, which is associated with a host of health problems, including mood disorders and metabolic issues.

To manage blue light exposure, consider limiting screen time in the evenings and using blue light filters on digital devices.

Here is everything I recommend for light protection

Melatonin and Your Well-Being

Melatonin plays a vital role in maintaining our sleep-wake cycle and overall well-being. In this section, we explore how blue light affects melatonin production and the importance of natural light exposure.

How Blue Light Affects Melatonin

Melatonin is commonly known as the hormone of darkness, naturally produced in response to darkness and crucial for sleep regulation. Blue light exposure can dramatically hinder melatonin production, especially when we’re exposed to it at night.

Experiments have shown that using blue light-blocking glasses can help maintain melatonin levels, improving sleep quality. This is particularly useful for those who work late or often use electronics before bed.

To preserve melatonin levels, consider creating a bedtime routine that minimizes blue light exposure. This could involve dimming lights and avoiding screens an hour before bed. Listen to my 36 sleep tips podcast here. Episode 7 if you want to download

Ultimately, managing blue light exposure can significantly improve sleep quality, which is integral to our physical and mental health.

Importance of Morning Sunlight

Exposure to natural sunlight in the morning is crucial for synchronizing our circadian rhythm and boosting melatonin production later in the day. Morning sunlight exposure helps reset our internal clock, promoting alertness and energy. Melatonin is made in early AM light!

Developing a morning routine that includes outdoor time can enhance mood and cognitive function. This practice is not only beneficial for your sleep cycle but also supports overall health.

Studies indicate that spending at least 15-30 minutes outside in the morning can help regulate your body’s natural rhythms, leading to better sleep and improved well-being.

Regular morning sunlight exposure can counteract the effects of artificial light and support a balanced circadian rhythm. However, if you allow unopposed fake light on your eyes and skin at night it will be a wash and the more you do it, the detriments will outweigh the benefits and you will believe the sun doesn’t do anything.

Sun raises dopamine, blue light lowers it.

Melanopsin: This is our blue light receptor. It was discovered in the eye in 1998 and in the skin in 2017. Our skin and eyes were meant to get blue light from natural sources- aka the Sun. Blue light from the sun is always balanced with red and the other colors of the spectrum. However, when it is just with artificial blue lights it has devastating effects on our eye health and our biology and the programs that we run within. Especially when it comes to sleep and our hormone melatonin.
